H‍oney Fungus

A sci-fi virtual reality work and installation by artist Jonah King that invites the audience to expand their bodily experience of the greater ecosystem.

Honey Fungus is an interactive VR experience where users are guided by a queer, sentient mycelial entity through vignettes based on the fungal reproductive cycle. Across multiple scenes, users are invited to engage in sensory interactions that shape and transform the environment. As they progress, they encounter spores that reveal the earth’s hidden vitality and erotic potential, speaking through poetic passages generated by training AI on a unique blend of Smithsonian field research and amateur erotica. In these spaces, the scientific merges with the sensual, opening possibilities for new forms of ecological stewardship and mutual care between human and non-human life.

Working collaboratively with the artist, we produced this interactive VR film, bringing it to its World Premiere at SXSW XR Experience 2025. We worked with the artist and Pariah Interactive to develop new scenes, interactivity, and testing of new builds.
